Riding to Avalon

Ok, here it is....
November 2008 007
Pattern: Riding to Avalon from Knitscene magazine Fall 2008
Yarn: Silky Merino Malabrigo (8 skeins) in Madre Perla
size: 38
needles: US 5, 3.75mm

I can finally blog about this lovely sweater now that I have some lovely photos to show it off. Thanks to Kniftyred, who met up with me to take this pictures at the Beverly Unitarian Church. The church looks like a castle. I don't know much about its history, but it was a great spot for this pictures. We lucked out with the weather though! It was bitterly cold, but the sun came out and we got the shoot in before the snow :D

It was a lot of fun. I've never done a real photoshoot before for my finished knits, but I think I may have to do them justice for now on and take the time to take some decent, if not wonderful photos like the ones my friend took.

Making this sweater was a dream. The yarn is so soft and it drapes so nicely. The fit came out very well. There a a couple inches of ease, which I think suits and hides certain areas ;) Though I've seen it knit on similar body types with zero ease and it looks fabulous on them. The sleeves are a bit long, but I'm okay with that. I am happy with the buttons I found for it too. They are abalone and have a simple design cut into them. I chose to use smaller, matching buttons for the sleeves.

I didn't really make any significant modifications. I did use a single crochet edge around the flaps and hood as I was creating the button loops. It just made sense to me to do the whole thing all with an edge rather than just attached crocheted loops. It helped clean up the edges too. I did the same with the sleeves. I meant to tackle the rolled hem, but decided I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would and, again, I wanted to stay as true to the pattern as necessary.

I ended up only using the first eight skeins I bought afterall, even though the pattern required one more to meet yardage. All the first eight were of the same dye lot, but there are variations in color, particularly in the hood.

Overall, a true success for me.

It's spectacular. You did a magnificent job on it. Perfect buttons, and the crocheted edging was a great idea. Can't wait to see it in person!

OMG--that is awesome. I loved that pattern the second I saw the preview for it. You did an amazing job. Well done. I hope when I find the time that mine will turn out as well. Beautiful!
