Don't Try and Push a Pipe Cleaner in Your Uterus and Other (Non) Abortion Stories.

A friend had been planning a hysterectomy for a while now, but she kept changing the date. Over the weekend, I found out it was going to be this Thursday! I decided to make her a recovery/gag gift.

This was a very fast knit. I didn't have any bulky yarn, so I knit double stranded and went up a needle size. Knit in Cascade 220.

The hardest part about making this uterus, was getting the damn pipe cleaners into the Fallopian tubes. Pushing them in did not work, as the wire is weak and they just bend if it snags on anything. And they did snag. So I looked around the house for something long, skinny and sturdy to help push them in. You won't believe how long I wandered around the house muttering, "Long and skinny, long and skinny." DUH!!! This is a house full of knitting! I felt so stupid when I saw my knitting needles, as I had a few dpns lying around from the sock I was working on. A nice small US1 seemed perfect.

I struggled with that for a while, wrapping the wire around the tip of the needle and pushing that through together. The dpn went through just fine, it was the pipe cleaner that got left behind. *sigh* Finally, I dug out a tapestry needle, pushed the pipe cleaner through the opening and wrapped it around itself, trying to reduce the bulk. I pushed that up the tube and pulled it out the other end, and presto! It was in! I cut off the excess, and followed the rest of instructions from there.

I'm going to bring this to the hospital for her on Friday, along with some chocolates. I hope she gets a laugh. :)
